Delmarva Coastal Communities Initiative

General Information:
DCCI Description 092005
Due to the close geographic nature of Delmarva, which encompasses parts of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, it is impossible for the actions of one state or county to not have an effect on neighboring areas.

Counties within Delmarva share numerous coastal resources and with rapid population increases in coastal communities, steps taken to promote sustainable planning practices are of utmost importance to successfully and simultaneously balance natural resources with future land use.

On January 21, 2005, 45 local, state, and federal leaders and planners from Worcester County, Maryland, Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia, and Sussex County, Delaware met in Ocean City to encourage and create partnerships to tackle these issues.

These leaders and planners were invited to identify and discuss areas where collaborative efforts among the three states could be formed to address issues such as coastal development, tourism, groundwater, agriculture, wildlife and natural habitats.

Three sessions were offered:
Session 1: Local Trends In The Area - Local jurisdictions will be asked to give brief presentations about their organizations and will discuss their local issues concerning growth.

Session 2: Panel Presentations - Planning concerns from the local groups, as well as how planning and land use actions cumulatively impact local businesses, citizens, and groups.

Session 3: Group Discussion - Facilitated group discussion to identify and target common areas for collaboration.

Objectives
  • Promote Intergovernmental communication
  • Share philosophies concerning future development
  • Identify tools available to assist a regional planning
  • Provide a forum for local and state leaders to discuss their methods for addressing growth and development issues.
  • Discuss local concerns related to planning, land use, environment, and quality of life
