The Community Foundation - November 3, 2010

Stronger communities – connected, caring, giving communities – isn’t that what we all want? Isn’t that the kind of community you want to live in? Luckily, we have a host of organizations and individuals on the Eastern Shore that strive to better our community – to improve the quality of life for those of us that have chosen this area as our home – where we live, work, play, and raise our families. The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore fosters that sense of community and helps to fund numerous projects and programs throughout Worcester, Wicomico, and Somerset counties. The Community Foundation gives and allows us the opportunity to give back.

In the Annual Report, released last week, the Community Foundation announced that, through its endowment funds, donor advised funds, memorial funds, scholarships, grants and other giving programs, they distributed a record $4.1 million in 2010, addressing a tremendous variety of needs within our community.

Through their giving programs, the Community Foundation supports health and human services, the arts, education, and the environment. They give as much as they can when a need is identified.

With the leadership of Dr. Spicer Bell, President, and the vision and dedication of the all-volunteer Board of Directors, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore has been recognized as one of the top 100 in the country – 23rd in fundraising and giving, per capita.

In recent years, they have added a Non-Profit Support Center and, now, house the ShoreCAN Volunteer Center, helping local organizations build capacity so that they may better serve the community.

The Maryland Coastal Bays Program is just one of hundreds of local organizations that have received assistance from the Community Foundation over the years. Coastal Bays has received funding to purchase equipment needed to improve water quality monitoring programs, support for an clean-up event held on Earth Day, and grants to help Coastal Bays and partners reach out to new audiences – helping to connect children and nature, educate local gifted and talented students about local environmental and cultural issues, and create green jobs for local youth.

The Community Foundation also manages an endowment fund for the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, specifically established to support environmental education programs in the coastal bays watershed and surrounding area. And the Maryland Coastal Bays Program is just one example – there are hundreds of others.

Coastal Bays has taken advantage of the professional development and capacity-building opportunities offered through the Non-Profit Support Center and has recruited volunteers through the ShoreCAN Volunteer Center.

For local non-profits, the Community Foundation offers resources that raise the level of professionalism of staff, boards, and volunteers, and empower and enable local organizations to better serve local people. The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore is truly a pillar of our community – helping to support and elevate the quality of our lives.
