Giving Tuesday - November 13, 2016

Thanksgiving is upon us and soon the holiday season will be in full swing.  Before long, we will once again be ushering in a New Year.   As we look forward to 2017 we reflect on this past year and the opportunity to support our charities of choice so they can carry on their great work.  Making a contribution also allows us to feel good about making a small difference in our community.

In an effort to consolidate local end of the year fundraising opportunities, Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is participating with nearly 60 local nonprofit organizations in the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore’s (CFES) 2016 Giving Tuesday online charitable giving day. For one day it’s an easy one-stop shop to donate to local charities. The effort is known locally as “Shore Gives More” and will be held this year on Tuesday, November 29th.

All of the nonprofit organizations participating in the “Shore Gives More” online campaign serve Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.  “Last year was the first time the Community Foundation organized a Giving Tuesday campaign in collaboration with nonprofits in Worcester County,” said Erica Joseph, CFES President. “This year the campaign includes nonprofits from all three counties on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.”

One hundred percent of all charitable gifts made by donors through the “Shore Gives More” website will benefit the nonprofits who participate in this year’s online campaign.  The Hershey Family Fund at the Community Foundation is paying for all processing fees. “This enables 100 percent of all online contributions to go directly to our local participating nonprofits,” Joseph said. “We also thank our primary sponsors, Delmarva Power and 47 ABC for their support.”

Giving Tuesday is actually a global initiative started by the New York City 92nd Street Y and their partners in 2012. The idea was simple; to connect diverse groups of individuals, communities, and organizations around the world to celebrate and encourage giving and community involvement.  Since 2012, the movement has really taken off and includes over 30,000 partners in 68 countries representing small businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, major corporations and others.

The popularity of “Giving Tuesday” has grown significantly in recent years and is held the Tuesday after “Black Friday,” the largest shopping day of the year, immediately following Thanksgiving, and “Cyber Monday,” the largest online shopping day of the year.  “Shore Gives More is one more way of engaging donors and adding capacity to the participating nonprofit organizations who serve our area,” Joseph added.

To learn more about the “Shore Gives More” online Giving Tuesday campaign for local nonprofits visit www.shoregivesmore.org.  Through this website you can donate to any of the 60 local non-profits, including MCBP on Giving Tuesday.  Of course you may still donate through each individual non-profit website, or through their mailing campaigns, but thanks to sponsors, this campaign comes with additional perks for nonprofits that receive funds through “Shore Gives more”.  .

The first nonprofit to receive a donation through this website on Tuesday, November 29 will be awarded sponsorship monies. Another contribution is made to the nonprofit with the most donations madeduring happy hour, 4-7 pm on the 29th..

MCBP has partnered with Lower Shore Land Trust and will be hosting a happy hour at Burley Oak Brewery during that timehoping to capture one of these incentives.   For each person that donates a little as $5 a raffle ticket will be given to win a prize during the happy hour. To be entered into the raffle, you must be present at the event and show proof of donation.

Music will be provided by Mike Dryden and there will be appetizers from local restaurants.

MCBP also has a private donor that will pledge a $500 matching contribution. We at MCBP hope that you will consider giving during this campaign, as funds raised will go towards providing internships for local youth and our educational programs. We also encourage you to p consider donating to other participants including Lower Shore Land Trust.
